to finish a book

i am a chronic project-starter. like, i start ten projects and i finish two of them. i hate this about myself, but it's just who i am, no matter how badly i want to change it.

i'm also a book starter, as opposed to a book finisher. i'll start a book and get so enveloped in it that i'll hail it as the best book i've ever read, start applying its principles, and then set it down... and never pick it back up.

i'll get distracted and life will move on as the dust settles on the beloved book. soon enough another book will catch my fancy and i'll start that one. and so the cycle continues. i wouldn't call myself "a reader", so that probably doesn't help either.

this is my current pile of loved-them-so-much-that-they-remain-unfinished books.

and there are about six more sitting unfinished in my kindle app. seriously, it's like a disorder. so, i'm forcing myself to finish all of them before i'm allowed to pick up a new book.

are you this way? want to join me in this challenge?

let's finish all those unfinished books. and then let's pick up a brand new one, fresh with the relief and satisfaction of having just finished a whole buncha books.

edited to include the list of all the books i'm committed to finish:

Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God

Grace for the Good Girl: Letting Go of the Try-Hard Life

Grace-Based Parenting

The Pursuit of God

The Fitting Room: Putting On the Character of Christ

What Women Fear: Walking in Faith that Transforms

The Kite Runner

You Lost Me: Why Young Christians Are Leaving Church...and Rethinking Faith

One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are

Lies Women Believe: And the Truth that Sets Them Free

and once i'm done with those, this is the first one i'll be picking up:

Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit

after emailing with my friend Lindsy, i'm planning to read one a month, just to keep myself at a good pace. some of these only have a few chapters left, so i'll be finished much faster, but one-per-month seems like a good place to start!

  1. Yes, I am guilty too. I get into one in the season that I'm in and then for whatever reason, I don't finish it. That's usually the case for me although I got a new one for Christmas and finished it in three days. Probably because I've had time off from school(teaching). The day to day schedule of life gets in my way-Id much prefer to sit down and finish one from start to finish.
On a side note, I'm itching to get my hands on my friend Angie's newest book!

    1. yes, if i have the time i can definitely finish a book. it's just that i'll get busy part-way through and then by the time i can sit down again, i already want to start a different one. so strange!

  3. I am SO with you. I really want to read a book a month this year. And that means cutting out some stuff (like probably time on twitter!!) which I am more than okay with. :-) I hope you'll keep sharing what you are reading!

to wipe away your yelling

one of my favorite things to do in december is to drive around to see the lights. our neighborhood is huge, and we have some seriously awesome houses. one of them is our next-door neighbor, so we don't have to look very far it we don't want to. but at least five or six times in december i would stick the girls in the car and drive around our neighborhood to spot the best-decorated houses. one particular evening, as we were driving, i asked my three-year old if she remembered what was so special about Christmas. "it's when Jesus came to see all my presents!" that's when you know you're doing a good job, right? yeah, so i gently reminded her that Jesus came, in fact, to wipe away our sins. after a thirty second pause, she wondered out loud: "He came to wipe away your yelling?" straight.to.the.heart. "Because when you yell, that's your sin. and when i don't listen to you, that's my sin." yes, right again. i found
